At first ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ was not shown in every cinema in the UK and USA. This is because at first Boyle thought it would be a film to be shown in Art House cinemas. This soon changed when the hype of ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ hit both the UK and USA. Slumdog Millionaire was first shown at the Telluride Film Festival on 30 August 2008, where it was positively received by audiences, the film also screened at the Toronto International film Festival on 7 September 2008, where it was "the first widely acknowledged popular success" of the festival. When ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ was first released in 9 January 2009 in the UK, it was originally meant to be shown in Art House cinemas but with its success it was quickly, moved from Art House cinemas to major cinemas such as Odeon and Vue. It was released in USA on the 23rd January 2008. In North America the film only opened in 10 cinemas, then in the second week it was shown in 32 cinemas by the 25 December it was shown In 614.
